How Often Do You Need to Order Propane for Your Pool or Hot Tub?
If you’re a pool owner in Northeast Florida, you’ve probably realized it’s that time of year to power on the pool heater. When you start using your pool heater more regularly, you may wonder when and how often you need to order propane. At Sea Breeze Propane, we’re here to help! You can count on us to deliver your propane when you need it but first keep reading this post to get a better idea of how often you need to order propane.
Why Heat Your Pool with Propane?
Propane pool heaters have several advantages over other types of pool heaters. With electric heat pumps, for example, the pump pulls heat from the air to warm the pool, which may not get the water as warm as you’d like quickly enough. Solar pool heaters, likewise, require a system that’s equal to at least 50% of the pool’s surface. The pump, which is electric, must also run for the heater to work, increasing your electric usage. Propane, on the other hand, is an easy, hassle-free way to get your pool heated fast without breaking the bank.
How Do Propane Pool Heaters Work?
Propane pool heaters are fueled by propane gas, which is stored in a tank on your property. When you turn on your propane pool heater, the gas is burned to heat the water in your pool. The heater contains a combustion chamber, a heat exchanger, and a blower. Propane is burned in the combustion chamber, which heats the water in the exchanger. The blower then circulates the heated water back into your pool.
How Quickly Will I Use Propane?
The rate at which you’ll use propane really depends on how many gallons your pool is, how much sunlight hits your pool, how warm you like the water, how often you use your pool heater. Propane pool heaters are extremely efficient. To give you a general estimate, on average, it takes about one gallon per hour per 100,000 BTUs to operate. The average propane heater has about 400,000 BTUs which amounts to four gallons per hour.[1] It’s important to remember that how often you use your pool or hot tub, the size of your propane tank, and the climate you live in can impact how often you will need to refill.
When to Order Propane
You should order propane when your tank gauge is at 30%. You should monitor your gauge to know when you should order, or you can sign up for convenient automatic delivery, and we’ll monitor your tank gauge for you. Experts recommend not letting your tank level drop below 20% before ordering a refill.
