Propane Grilling Safety & Small Cylinder Tips for the First Coast of FL

If you use a propane grill at your Northeast FL home like millions of other Americans, and it’s not hooked up to your propane tank, chances are you use 20 lb. propane cylinders to keep it fueled during grilling season. While these small cylinders are convenient and affordable, they must also be handled with care. At Sea Breeze Propane, we want to make sure your grill day isn’t only a blast for you and your guests but that it’s also safe, too. To keep your family and home secure while using small cylinders for your grill, follow these few guidelines:

Top Tips for Handling Small Cylinders During Grilling Season

1. Transporting Small Cylinders

When you are transporting small cylinders, it’s important to keep safety at the forefront of your mind. That means that when you have to transport a small cylinder in your vehicle, you should:

  • Always make sure your cylinders are stored securely and upright.
  • Never leave your propane cylinders in a hot vehicle.
  • Drive straight to your destination with your propane cylinder.
  • Take it out of the vehicle as soon as you arrive.

2. Connecting Your Cylinder to Your Grill

When it comes to hooking up your cylinder to your grill, this part is easy. All you must do is follow the manufacturer’s instructions. When you hook up your cylinder to your grill, be sure to check for gas leaks between the cylinders and the outdoor appliance fitting or regulator every time you connect the cylinder to your grill.

You can do this easily by using a leak detector solution or soapy water. Spray the connection with the solution and slowly open the cylinder valve. Watch for bubbles. If bubbles appear, close the valve, tighten the connection, and repeat the process until no bubbles appear. When you connect the cylinder to your grill, make sure the grill is always turned off.

3. Storing Your Small Cylinders

When it’s time to store your small cylinders, make sure you keep them outside. It’s never a good idea to keep them near or in your home. Also keep them out of small places that would become too warm, above 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Never store extra cylinders under or near a grill and keep ignition sources away from the area.
